Present: Marianne
Burke, Kairn Kelley, Rodger Kessler, Benjamin Littenberg
Topic: Scientific Communication
Reviewed slides in preparation for Kairn's upcoming presentation at
AAS. We talked about how data tells a story and specific ways to modify
scatter- and line-plots in Stata.
Discussed how Kairn can act on her enthusiasm about the
recent workshop offered by the UVM and the Alan Alda Center for Communicating
Science. Take-away message: “When there is something you really want, don’t
depend on anybody else to get it done.”
Further discussed scientific communication including the
problem of dealing with persistent myths. Ben recommends The Debunking Handbook by
John Cook and Stephan Lewandowsky as a great resource with a step-by-step guide
for arguing against misinformation.
