Periodically, I come across a quotation about the role of authority in science that strikes my fancy so strongly that I put it in on the sidebar of this blog's homepage (https://uvmcts.blogspot.com/). Here is the latest, thanks to Anu Garg (https://wordsmith.org). 

What has occurred over the course of the last few centuries is a growing (but by no means universal or certain) recognition that science gets the job done, while religion makes excuses.
