PhD candidate Emily Tarleton awarded research scholarship

Emily Tarleton has been awarded 2015 Betsy Hiser Scholarship by the Vermont Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Council on Professional Interests. These funds will be used to support her research on the role of magnesium supplementation in depression.
Many congratulations!

New report on decision support by Liz Chen

Highlights

  • This randomized controlled trial compared diagnostic rates and care planning by nurses in nurse practitioner training randomized to a mobile health decision support system (mHealth DSS) versus a control group for obesity and overweight, tobacco use, and depression.
  • Nurse practitioner students were assigned within specialty to receive mHealth DSS for 1 of 3 conditions.
  • Patient encounter (N = 34,349) was the unit of analysis.
  • Significant effect (P < .0001) of mHealth DSS on diagnosis.
  • Significant effect of mHealth DSS on the number of care plan items for obesity and overweight and pediatric depression.
  • Study adds to the body of literature suggesting that mHealth DSS has a positive effect on care processes.

Abstract

Research on mobile health decision support systems (mHealth DSS) is limited, and few studies have focused on nurses or nurse practitioners (NPs). This study compared diagnostic rates and care planning by nurses in NP training randomized to mHealth DSS versus a control group for obesity and overweight, tobacco use, and depression. The patient encounter (N = 34,349) was the unit of analysis in the randomized controlled trial. NP students were assigned within specialty to receive mHealth DSS for 1 of 3 conditions. There was a significant effect (P < .0001) of mHealth DSS on diagnosis, but the effect on number of care plan items varied.

Clinical Research Oriented Workshop (CROW) Meeting: Feb 20, 2015

Present:               Marianne Burke, Kairn Kelley, Rodger Kessler, Benjamin Littenberg
Topic: Scientific Communication
Reviewed slides in preparation for Kairn's upcoming presentation at AAS. We talked about how data tells a story and specific ways to modify scatter- and line-plots in Stata.
Discussed how Kairn can act on her enthusiasm about the recent workshop offered by the UVM and the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Take-away message: “When there is something you really want, don’t depend on anybody else to get it done.”
Further discussed scientific communication including the problem of dealing with persistent myths. Ben recommends The Debunking Handbook by John Cook and Stephan Lewandowsky as a great resource with a step-by-step guide for arguing against misinformation.
Next Workshop Meeting(s): Fridays, 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 p.m., at Given Courtyard South Level 4.   Remember: the first 15 minutes are for checking in with each other.
  1. Feb 27: cancelled
  2. March 6: cancelled
  3. March 13: TBD

Magnesium Intake and Depression in Adults

Next Section

Abstract

Background: Depression is a common and often disabling disorder. Magnesium supplementation has been linked to improvement in depressive symptoms, but consensus on the relationship between magnesium and depression has not been reached.
Methods: The purpose of this study was to test the existence of an association between dietary magnesium intake and depression in the adult US population. A cross-sectional, population-based data set (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) was used to explore the relationship of magnesium intake and depression in 8894 US adults (mean age, 46.1 years; 47.4% men) from 2007 to 2010. Using logistic regression to model the relationship between the presence of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥5) and low magnesium intake (<184 95="" and="" confidence="" day="" examined="" intake="" interval.="" its="" magnesium="" mg="" of="" p="" ratio="" risk="" the="" we="">
Results: After adjusting for all potential confounders, the strength of the association of very low magnesium intake with depression was statistically significant (RR = 1.16; 95% CI, 1.06–1.30). Adjusting for all other covariates, low magnesium intake was associated with depression in subjects younger than age 65 (RR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.06–1.40; P = .007) but seemed to be protective in seniors (RR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.56–0.98; P = .032).
Conclusions: We found a significant association between very low magnesium intake and depression, especially in younger adults. The finding of the potential protective effect of low magnesium intake in older adults is surprising and warrants further investigation.
