Dear LCOM Researchers and Research Staff,

We are inviting you and your colleagues to participate in a new REDCap training for research series that will begin in April. REDCap is a free and secure web-based application for building and managing online surveys and databases. If you or someone you know are interested in learning a bit more about the innovations of using REDCap for research at this institution, we invite you to register for these trainings using the registration links below.

There are two levels of this training series that are being offered, Part I and Part II, please see the descriptions of these sessions below. After each training session there will be an open forum for participants to ask questions and also come with their project specific questions if they are already REDCap users.

These trainings will take place via Zoom meetings. Pre-registration is required via the links below. Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation email with your unique log in for the meeting, please save this information to facilitate logging into the workshop the day of the event. On the day of the event, please do not share your unique link as it is registered specifically to you.

Introduction to REDCap: Part I

Description: In the first hour, we will highlight the key features of REDCap, create new projects and user rights, design data collection instruments, and move projects from Development to Production mode. Afterward, please feel free to stay and ask any REDCap-related questions for your specific projects.

Presenter: Jeff Priest
Date: Wednesday April 14, 2021

New NHATS COVID-19 Files Released

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) is pleased to announce that new COVID-19 files are now available.

Users may now apply for access to the NHATS COVID-19 Family Members and Friends (FF) Beta file under NHATS’ sensitive data procedures available at https://www.nhats.org/researcher/data-access/sensitive-data-files?id=nsoc_other_sensitive_files. This file provides new data about the experiences of family members and friends who helped NHATS participants during the COVID-19 outbreak. SAS and Stata versions are available. An updated user guide and variable-instrument crosswalk can be found at https://www.nhats.org/researcher/nhats. The NHATS COVID-19 FF Beta file may be used in conjunction with the early release beta version of the COVID-19 Sample Person (SP) file (available under Public Use Files).

In addition, users may now apply for access through the NHATS restricted data repository to a qualitative file with transcribed responses about how COVID-19 has affected NHATS participants’ lives. More information about how to apply for and access these files is available at https://www.nhats.org/researcher/data-access/sensitive-data-files?id=restricted_data_files.

Recent HRS Data Releases and Updates

The following data products are now available on the HRS website:

Public Data Releases and Updates

The COVID-19 Project was originally released in November 2020. In February 2021, we updated the psychosocial data (Section LB) to add additional data from psychosocial questionnaires received since the original data release. The COVID-19 Project of HRS 2020 is being administered to the 50% random subsample of households who were originally assigned to enhanced face-to-face interviewing (EFTF), in two random half groups, one starting in June and one in September. This special release includes 3,266 respondents from the group released in June and was produced under an accelerated time frame to facilitate rapid access to HRS research data while the 2020 HRS data collection is still underway.

Restricted Data Releases and Updates

The Cross-Wave Social Security Weights have been updated to include cross-wave weight information for 2004-2016. Two respondent weights are provided for each wave, one for respondents who have a SS linkage in that wave and one for respondents who have ever had a SS linkage. The weights are defined for respondents who have a positive respondent weight in that wave (either core or nursing home weight) and who have the relevant linkage.

The Disability Analysis File (DAF) V1.0 is now available. The DAF is an analytical file covering the time period 1994 through 2018 of administrative data from historical, longitudinal and one-time data on HRS respondents who participated in the Supplemental Security Income (SS) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs and who consented to allow the HRS to obtain their administrative benefits records at the Social Security Administration. Two versions of the DAF are available to restricted data users, one without geographic identifiers and one with geographic identifiers, depending on researcher's needs. Refer to the Data Description for more information.

Questions, comments or concerns about the above data products should be directed to the HRS Help Desk at hrsquestions@umich.edu.

RAND HRS Public Data

The following RAND HRS 2018 data products are now available:

  • The RAND HRS 2018 Fat File contains most of the original HRS variables from household and respondent level core modules. The data are merged to the respondent level.  There is one file for each survey year.
  • The RAND HRS Longitudinal File 2018 (V1) is a user-friendly file derived from all waves of the HRS. It is a respondent-level file containing cleaned and processed variables with consistent naming conventions, model-based imputations for missing data, and spousal counterparts of most individual-level variables.
  • The RAND HRS Detailed Imputations File 2018 (V1) contains the component and ownership variables for all waves that are used in the income, wealth, and medical expenditures summary measures found in the RAND HRS Longitudinal File. It is distributed as a companion file to the RAND HRS Longitudinal File, and is especially useful for those who require more detail than that found in the RAND HRS Longitudinal File.

In addition, RAND HRS Fat Files were updated for the years 2000, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

The RAND Center for the Study of Aging creates the RAND HRS data products under subcontract from HRS. The HRS and the RAND products are supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Questions regarding RAND HRS files should be directed to randhrshelp@rand.org.

Cover of Health, United States, 2019

About the report
Health, United States brings together many sources of federal and external data, making it easier to find and use accurate and reliable trend data on a variety of topics.

Selected findings from the report include:

  • The age-adjusted heart disease death rate decreased 15% between 2008 and 2018, from 192.1 to 163.6 deaths per 100,000 population.
  • In 2018, non-Hispanic white adults aged 50–75 reported the highest percentage of colorectal cancer screening compared with non-Hispanic black, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic adults.
  • Between 2008 and 2018, the supply of professionally active physicians in patient care increased from 256.63 to 278.49 per 100,000 resident population. In general, West South Central and Mountain states had the fewest physicians in patient care per population.
  • About four of every five Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and over had some form of Medicare supplemental coverage from 2010 to 2018, while one in five had traditional Medicare alone.

On Thursday, March 4th, join Health, United States for a live webinar on key findings of the report and updates on program modernization efforts. Register here.
