a.       Liz is working with Quality Counts, the QI organization affiliated with the Maine Medical Association.

b.       Focused on post-partum maternal hypertension, particularly educational material provided at birthing centers; how to improve related to health equity, culture competence, accessibility, etc. Research question: Are hypertension related education given to new moms culturally appropriate and accessible in rural Maine?

                                                   i.      Is the group Liz is working with clear on why they have focused on HTN for this population?

ii.      IRB is likely to exempt this as QI, not a research study with human subjects

1.       Check with the IRB at University of Southern Maine

iii.      For the several focus groups planned, how to organize presentation of materials

1.       Ground this in the research question and goals

2.       Recognize difference in populations and organize the focus groups accordingly

3.       Strive for universal design principles in education materials

3.                   Next week:  TBD

NIH Data Management and Sharing Plans - compilation of resources

Dear Colleagues,

Effective immediately, all NIH applications that generate research data (Research Projects, Individual Career Development Awards (Ks), Small Business SBIR/STTR, and Research Centers) require a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP); this includes new proposals or active NIH awards going up for renewal with receipt date of January 25, 2023.

UVM Research Development, Libraries, and Sponsored Projects Administration have partnered to provide you with resources and tools to help you prepare the 2-page DMSP document:

  • Application Instructions: These guidelines describe all the elements that you must consider when developing and uploading your data management and sharing plan.

  • DMPTool: UVM partners with DMPTool, a free service that helps researchers and institutions to create, review, and share high-quality data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements. Log in with your @uvm.edu email address.

We hope you will find these resources helpful in writing your DMS plans. If you have questions or need assistance, please see the Campus Support page.

Thank you,

Jeralyn

Health, United States, 2020–2021, the 44th annual report on the nation's health, is now available on the NCHS website.

About the report

Health, United States provides a wide array of trends in health statistics to policymakers, public health professionals, and the public. Starting with the 2020–2021 edition, the Health, United States: Annual Perspective integrates selected analyses from the Health, United States topics released online. The theme for the 44th edition of Health, United States is health disparities.

Selected findings from Health, United States, 2020–2021: Annual Perspective include:

  • Non-Hispanic Black people have higher heart disease death rates than people of other racial and ethnic groups.
  • Health insurance coverage has increased over time, but Hispanic adults are the most likely to lack health insurance and have unmet need for medical care.
  • Males have higher substance use and lower use of health care than females.
  • Adults living below 200% of the federal poverty level are the least likely to have recently seen a dentist.
  • Adults with no high school diploma or GED are more than four times as likely to smoke cigarettes as those with a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Males die three to four times as often from suicide and four times as often from homicide as females.
  • The rate of new HIV diagnoses increased for non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native people, while the rates of new diagnoses in all other race and Hispanic-origin groups decreased.

On Thursday, February 16th, join Health, United States for a live webinar on key findings of the report and updates on program modernization efforts.
