New research network for studying aging, upcoming virtual events

The Network for Data-Intensive Research on Aging (NDIRA) seeks to build and support an interdisciplinary and diverse community of researchers using complex data in innovative ways. We invite both established scholars of aging and life course processes and those new to the field to learn more about membership and to join the NDIRA community.  Read on to learn more about ways to connect with IPUMS in the next month.     TALK DATA TO US Webinars and Workshops Join us for these upcoming events Linking CPS (to CPS and ATUS): A Brief Overview | April 21 at 1pm CT | Register here Join us to learn more about linking across months of Current Population Survey (CPS) data and linking CPS to data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS). This workshop will include an overview of the CPS rotation pattern and the work IPUMS has done to simplify CPS linking as well as information about why and how ATUS data can be linked to CPS. How to make the contraceptive calendar work for you: an introduction to using PMA data | May 4th at 10am ET | Register here Join IPUMS and Performance Monitoring for Action for workshop on the basics of analyzing the contraceptive calendar data, such as converting data format from wide to long, transforming string variables, and basic analysis of factors associated with contraceptive discontinuation, with breakout sessions for both R or Stata. The IPUMS Team     NEW BLOG POST   WHERE WAS IPUMSI IN 2020? Last March, when the IPUMS International research team attended the 51st Meeting of the UN Statistical Commission, we were just beginning to hear about the spread of a novel virus. We soon discovered that the Commission meeting would be our last in-person event of the year. Soon after, a pandemic quickly paralyzed our world, including the ever-important census and survey work. Clinical Research Oriented Workshop (CROW) Meeting: April 8, 2021

 

Present:   Levi Bonnell, Justine Dee, Sylvie Frisbie, Nancy Gell, Juvena Hitt, Ben Littenberg, Charlie MacLean, Liliane Savard, Adam Sprouse Blum, Connie van Eeghen (10)

 1.                   Warm Up: Playdates for grad students?  No, grad students do play dates for young clients.  Ben was called out to help give vaccinations.

2.                   Liliane Savard: Brainstorm PCORI Engagement Award.  She has developed a stakeholder group with a family member co-chair and asked if they have an interest in research, based on this FOA.  They do, with a due date of May 24. The project

a.       Q1. What should the first meeting focus on? (see proposed agenda below) 

                                                   i.      brain storm deliverables/Aims of the proposal – start with the goals of the group or vision

1.       Focus on deliverables, including rural community engagement

2.       Highlight track record of engagement

3.       Use their language “build capacity for research”

4.       Future work: use NNE CTR to engage Maine members

                                                 ii.      create a timeline with steps to submitting the application

                                               iii.      assign general roles: writers, reviewers, budget developer, administrative records, letters of support

b.       Q2. What roles will the team needs and how to assign these roles? Can a student (me) can or even should be PI?

                                                   i.      Liliane is non-salaried faculty, already a doctor, and in the middle of a PhD.  She may eligible for PI as a member of RMS; Amy Santis and Deb Cannon are the RMS contacts at SPA.  Find a way.  If not Liliane, then Emily from Communications Disorders can be PI.

                                                 ii.      How to make the application look competitive?  The message is that you have the time and the track record.

c.       Q3. What are the steps and information/collaboration needed? (like contacting SPA, but who at SPA? the Collaborative is part of CDCI, I am a student in the College of Medicine, the other committee members have affiliation with CNHS)

                                                   i.      Team management: be silent and listen; redirect as needed.

                                                 ii.      Be clear about goals for meeting.

                                               iii.      Structure the work plan/timeline based on delivery date.

                                               iv.      Keep meetings and distribute; follow up on accountability – Liliane’s action items
