Clinical Research Oriented Workshop (CROW) Meeting: Aug 28, 2014

Start Up: Recent VPR story about salmonella outbreaks on chicken farms document a QI project that focused on one farm’s processing method for dismembering previously clean chickens that led to the hen house as the vector.

1.                  Discussion: Kairn: draft of literature review/ quality improvement (QI) project
a.       Goal: approach the literature review for the dissertation as a QI project.  FOCUS: Efficient progress on dissertation as a whole and lit review with attention to specific process steps.
b.      Baseline measure: minutes/article.  Original goal: process and document 2 articles daily for literature review.
c.       Learnings: mapping out the process steps was helpful. It resulted in a new goal: process as many articles as possible to complete the dissertation, with minimum time in processing (selection, technical activities).  Moving to Zotera was helpful, which finds the citation from the pdf. Minutes/article dropped from 60 to 46 (a 23% reduction but still long for the goal of completion).
d.      Next steps: move key columns from Excel to Zotero and further reduce process steps.  Select articles based on holes that need to be filled.  Kairn estimates that she has about twenty articles left to read and will be complete in two weeks.

2.                  Next Workshop Meeting(s): Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., at Given Courtyard South Level 4.   Remember: the first 15 minutes are for checking in with each other.
a.       Sept 4: Rodger: SIM grant draft review
b.      Sept 11: Kairn: draft of lit review
c.       Sept 18: Marianne: draft of IRB application
d.      Sept 25: Ben (with Derek Lubetkin): draft of a paper on "Availability of US State Driver’s License Data for Obesity Research" - under the cone of silence.

Recorder: Connie van Eeghen
