Clinical Research Oriented Workshop (CROW) Meeting: Sept 1, 2022

Present:   Justine Dee, Ben Littenberg, Liliane Savard, Connie van Eeghen (6)

1.                   Warm Up: Jen is applying for a Post Doc in integrated care with a special focus on CD

2.                   Jen’s presentation:  Jen is asking for feedback on  a short presentation called “Healthcare Access for Persons with Communication Disabilities” (4-5 slides) and a panelist question set that she and others are giving at the UVMMC Equity Summit, “Mending ourselves, together”.  Presentation will be at Davis Auditorium at UVM MC.

a.       Who is Lynette Reep?

                                                   i.      Missing names of panelists

b.       CD is common

c.       Hexagon diagram: disparities in care

                                                   i.      Justine: needed more depth, why unmet need?

ii.      Why the red truck?  Emergency service

d.       ADA applies to CD: many and diverse disabilities

                                                   i.      Justine: law also applies to any practitioner who accepts Medicaid/Medicare

e.       Communication accommodations – national landscape: wide range of programs

                                                   i.      System level processes vs provider level – this  needed more visual support

f.        Path forward

                                                   i.      Need for more systematic methods to identify and document disabilities – this is a key part of the presentation; need more examples here?

ii.      Local (UVM MC): early, working on documentation – this is key too

iii.      Highlight the acronym; consider breaking into two slides – lot of content

1.       Ben: Familiarize – clarify that the focus is patient need

2.       Ben: Consider: is this a key part of the purpose of this presentation?

g.       Path forward – provider level – five pieces of advice from Burns 2012

                                                   i.      Reduce jargon; add missing information, e.g. “rate of speech”

h.       Resources page – only needed for reference – move to “Appendix” and refer at closing of panel

                                                   i.      Include link for catalogue

i.         Questions for panelists: all couched in the negative; ask for both

j.         Discussion

                                                   i.      Good looking presentation!

ii.      Plan is to offer a copy, but not a handout

iii.      Slides don’t provide content, at least the key word

iv.      “On the autism spectrum” – do not use “disorder”

                                                 v.      Start with agenda/plan and bridge to panel

vi.      Consider a wrap up after the panel: need to work on as an institution, not as individual providers

vii.      Make the “invisible” population more visible

                                            viii.      Use plain language

ix.      How to be diplomatic r/t local stakeholders: “Shout out to xxxx who has put together some great supports at UVM MC; we need to continue to support their work and expand it.”

                                                 x.      Engage the audience: how will you use this/what is one thing you will do differently – and include in the CME evaluation survey

3.                   Next week:  Jen and her personal statement for post doc at Northwestern
