Clinical Research Oriented Workshop (CROW) Meeting: Jan 26 2023

 

Present:   Juvena Hitt, Ben Littenberg, Liliane Savard, Adam Sprouse Blum, Connie van Eeghen, Liz Winterbauer (6)

 1.                   Warm Up: Winter is here and ‘tis the season for new projects!

2.                   Liz: Protocols for patient focus groups on educational materials distributed to post-partem moms

a.       Liz is working with Quality Counts, the QI organization affiliated with the Maine Medical Association.

b.       Focused on post-partum maternal hypertension, particularly educational material provided at birthing centers; how to improve related to health equity, culture competence, accessibility, etc. Research question: Are hypertension related education given to new moms culturally appropriate and accessible in rural Maine?

                                                   i.      Target audience: new moms, as well as other women with access barriers, who may develop post-partum problems and need to know to get care

                                                 ii.      Partners: “In Her Presence” (supports new refugees, including Somali), Maine Primary Care Association (FQHCs, including rural, homeless, vulnerable), Maine Health Department home health services

1.       The Maine organization is interested in developing relationships with these groups

c.       Discussion:

                                                   i.      Is the group Liz is working with clear on why they have focused on HTN for this population?

                                                 ii.      IRB is likely to exempt this as QI, not a research study with human subjects

1.       Check with the IRB at University of Southern Maine

                                               iii.      For the several focus groups planned, how to organize presentation of materials

1.       Ground this in the research question and goals

2.       Recognize difference in populations and organize the focus groups accordingly

3.       Strive for universal design principles in education materials
